Selected for upright somewhat columnar habit, nice reddish new growth in spring, and very dark attractive mature foliage, this evergreen shrub makes a fantastic hedge plant. Small white fragrant flowers are followed by fall berries that are loved by birds. A popular species for the Southeast.
A good option for the hot, humid south east. Provide well-drained acidic soil with high organic matter. Water deeply, regularly to establish a strong root system. Reduce frequency once established. Can tolerate mild drought. Use a slow release fertilizer in spring. Appreciates afternoon shade in hot southern summers. Little pruning is needed. To shape, prune in spring by cutting 1/3 of the tallest stems to the base.
